By the time you pack your bag for hospital, your pregnancy brain will probably be in full swing – which means that all the things you were planning on taking with you may sit forgotten in your bedroom while you lie in the ward wishing you had a brush for your bed hair. But if you make a list and include these items – your comfort will be guaranteed.

  • Your phone charger. How can you update your WhatsApp group if your phone isn’t fully charged?
  • Snacks for you, for your partner and visitors. Chances are you’ll go into full munchie mode as soon as your baby starts feeding. It’s also nice to offer your visitors a biscuit or piece of cake.
  • Your own pillow. You’ll be in hospital for a few days, especially if you’ve had a C-section, so some home comfort will be more than welcome.
  • Dry shampoo. If you’re not up to standing in the hospital shower cubicle, you’ll be grateful for this – after all, clean hair is an instant pick-me-up.
  • Facial wipes. We’re not all Superwoman, and doing a full facial cleanse may be a bit beyond you after having your baby, but it still feels good to refresh yourself.
  • Lip ice. The mixture of medicines and physical exertion can leave your lips feeling sticky and dry.
  • Night-time sanitary pads – just as effective as maternity pads, but more comfortable.
  • Bridget Jones panties. Those pads aren’t going to fit into anything smaller, are they?
  • Linen savers. You might not need them, but just in case.
  • Vases for the flowers your visitors bring you.
  • Arnica – a great remedy for swelling and bruising, whether your birth was natural or C-section.
  • Wound and grazing powder for your little one’s umbilical cord.
