3 pregnancy super smoothies

You may not be able to stomach much during pregnancy, but make sure these super foods are on your menu. By nutritional therapist Hannah Kaye

During pregnancy the thought of food could either bring on the nausea, or you could feel so ravenous that no amount of food can satisfy your cravings. A nutritious smoothie is a convenient way to get all the extra nourishment you need when you’re expecting and, as heavy meals may not be that appealing, snacking on healthy smoothies is a much better option.

Soy vanilla nut freeze

*Makes 1 – 2 servings

Ingredients

  • ½ cup vanilla soy milk (available from Woolworths)
  • ½ cup low-fat vanilla frozen yoghurt
  • 1 medium banana, peeled
  • ½ cup apricot or mango juice
  • 5 – 10 almonds (optional)
  • 3 ice cubes
  • A swirl of honey

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. You can add more soy milk or juice to the mixture for easier blending.

Chocolate coconut surprise

*Makes 2 – 3 servings

Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (preferably organic)
  • 1 – 2 tbsp almond butter (or Nutella if you’re craving something sweet)
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.

Berry smoothie

*Makes 1 – 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup low-fat plain yoghurt
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 1 cup soy milk

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.
