Whether you’re getting ready to go back to work or you just want to get some rest or go out, using a breast pump means that your baby can benefit from your milk even when you’re not around. Selecting just the right one will help you keep your milk flowing and prevent plugged ducts or an infection.
Choosing a breast pump
If you’ll only be away from your baby occasionally and your milk supply is well-established, a simple hand pump might be all you need. However, an electric pump is a better option if you’re returning to work full-time and are away from your baby for more than a few hours a day.
A typical pumping session lasts about 10 to 15 minutes on each breast, so if you’re expressing at work or are crunched for time, it may be worth investing in a double breast pump to halve your expressing time, although these are more expensive.

All breast pump parts that come in contact with breast milk should be cleaned after each use with liquid dish washing soap and warm water.
Consult your instruction manual to make sure the pieces are dishwasher safe and it isn’t necessary to clean the tubing unless it comes in contact with breast milk.
Electrical units, which hold the motor and batteries, should be wiped down after each use.
Basic Cleaning Method
- Read the instruction manual to find out which parts should be washed and the best way to remove parts that must be cleaned.
- Right after pumping, rinse each piece in cool water.
- Wash each piece using dish washing liquid and plenty of warm water.
- Rinse each piece thoroughly with hot water for 10 to 15 seconds.
- Air-dry the pieces on clean paper towel or on a clean drying rack.
- Avoid using cloth towels to dry the pieces as they carry germs.
- Once dry, assemble the pump before you store it or use it.
- Try not to touch the inside of any parts that will come in contact with your breast milk.
