2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and parents everywhere have tried to keep it together for the sake of their children.

One mom in particular, Masetshaba Shojole from Bela-Bela in Limpopo, has been doing a good job at it and recently received a wonderful and tear-jerking gesture from her 10-year-old daughter Phetogo.

Phetogo, a grade 5 scholar, wrote a heartwarming letter to her mother, starting with the words: Thank you for being my supermom.

Masetshaba, unfortunately, lost her job as a result of the global pandemic. She is one of the three million South Africans whose job status changed to ‘unemployed’ during the lockdown. She was an invigilator in the higher education sector, and when schools shut down in March, that was the end of her job security. She is still on the job market and has not yet secured another opportunity.

With all the challenges happening around her with no source of income and raising her child single-handedly, she tried keeping it together for Phetogo, but she saw how hard her mother tried to keep smiling even though she was going through pain.

As a result, Phetogo devised a plan to save up some money and managed to put together a whopping R48, mostly in R1 coins, and gave them all to her mother. She kept them in a small plastic bag and the money accompanied the letter.

Masetshaba tells us that “I was sitting in my room when Phetogo walked in and asked me to close my eyes because she had something to give me”. Phetogo loves surprising her mother. She handed her a DIY envelope that had the letter and the money inside.

Phetogo tells her mom that “it’s my turn to help you” in the letter she wrote for her.

Shared just this morning in the #ImStaying Facebook group, Masetshaba and Phetogo’s story is the top story with more than 28 000 likes already. The story is being hailed for the good job Masetshaba is doing to raise her daughter and how blessed she is for having such a thoughtful child.

Describing her daughter, Masetshaba says she is a resilient, strong, thoughtful, and mature girl, but her life has not been without challenges.

During the lockdown, Phetogo started struggling to walk and when her mother took her to the doctor, she was diagnosed with arthritis. She is now taking medication to help her with her condition.

Her mother was overwhelmed with emotion when she spoke about her condition and tells us that “she is so strong that she will not complain about her pain and will only tell me about it when she comes back from school”.

Even while facing her own adversities at the age of 10, this superstar still considers the strength and resilience of her mother.

The apple truly never falls far from the tree.
