Moms don’t often get to enjoy leisurely lunches sipping wine and eating anything other than left-over fish fingers. So, when opportunity next knocks, grab your mom pals or your partner and head to Gigi Rooftop for an afternoon of good food and wine.
The place to be
Situated in the heart of the Cape Town city centre, this indoor/outdoor rooftop bar and restaurant is the perfect meeting spot for lunch or cocktails. With its wooden and terracotta-tiled pool deck, emerald-green glass panelled swimming pool, and views of whitewashed heritage buildings, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the heart of Marrakesh. Even though you can’t see the ocean or Table Mountain from the sixth floor of the new design-led hotel, Gorgeous George, make no mistake, the city has its own magical vibe.
What to drink
If you’re a cocktail fan, you’ll love the drinks menu, a delectable fusion of modern and classic tiki-bar-inspired drinks designed by Jody Rahme, a finalist in several world bartending championships. We’d recommend having ‘Carrot Away’ when you find yourself at this edgy new bar for cocktail hour. It sounds too healthy for moms’ day off we know, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Roasted carrot juice, mango cordial and beer vermouth shaken with premium American bourbon will soon become your favourite new sun downer.
Not a cocktail fan? No worries, the restaurant has an extensive wine list, whiskey and gin selection.
What to eat
While we would all love to drop an extra kilo or two, you will be forgiven for giving in and having a cheat day. If you enjoy treating yourself to a glass of bubbly every now and then, definitely try the Saltare Brut, paired with the Milk & Honey Crème – honeycomb, yoghurt, and honey, gelato, vanilla roasted nuts and granadilla. You will not regret it! The menu is seasonal, so we’re holding thumbs that this tantalizing dessert will be available throughout the year.
Executive chef Guy Bennett has many other delicious tricks up his white chef’s sleeves, including 9-hour slow cooked spice-cured duck leg with honey braised cabbage, fondant potato, heirloom beetroot and walnut. Yep, it tastes even better than it sounds!
Can we stay over?
While you probably won’t be able to book a room on the spot if you’ve had one cocktail too many, you’ll love staying at this bold, eccentric hotel if you plan in advance. While they do have a two bedroom suite available for parents who want to take the kids along, the Gorgeous George Hotel is best for a romantic weekend getaway or an anniversary celebration.
