How to create a cute ladybird theme for your little girl’s birthday

Noeleen Foster shows us how to put this cute little ladybird theme party together.

Ladybird theme

Red is a festive colour that makes a big statement. And nothing shouts red and party, especially for a little girl, more than a ladybird theme. So just when you thought you could pack away your Christmas table cloth and red décor, we say… not so fast. This little ladybird party is the perfect opportunity to bring out the red and celebrate this sweet little theme.

Clever ideas

  • Red and pink décor is abundant in the shops this time of year. Go big with red lanterns, paper daisies and paper foldouts.
  • Always looking to serve something healthy? Fruit is the perfect candidate, and most kids love strawberries, watermelon and cherries, which are perfect for this occasion.

Strawberries

  • Watermelon on sticks: slice into triangles and insert ice-cream sticks (we love this idea as the kids can help themselves).

  • Jelly is a firm favourite among little people. If you are pressed for time and can’t make your own, have a look at your local store – you’re bound to find pre-made jelly. (Woolies makes a great variation with fruit in it.)

Jelly

  • Mini chicken mince balls are great finger food. These are great for toddles and adults alike. Make your own with this easy recipe below.

Mini chicken balls

Mini chicken mince balls (serve with a sweet chilli sauce)

Ingredients

  • 500g chicken mince
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 50g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 carrot, grated (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • ½ tsp salt or garlic salt
  • 100g (1 cup) dry breadcrumbs
  • Oil for cooking

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C.
  2. Combine the mince, zest, Parmesan, carrot, egg, parsley and salt. Add enough breadcrumbs to bring the mixture together.
  3. Form the mixture into 2cm balls.
  4. In a heavy-based frying pan, heat a little oil over medium-high heat.
  5. Cook the balls until they are golden brown.
  6. Transfer the balls to an oven tray and bake until they are cooked through.

Variation:
Substitute lemon zest and parsley for 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce and 2 tbsp chopped coriander for Thai chicken balls.

  • Make ‘bug juice’ labels – it’s as simple as printing on regular paper and wrapping them around your little bottles. (We like Woolies grape, apple and cranberry mix as it’s 100% pure fruit juice that’s not too sweet for the little ones.)

  • Fashion your own little ladybirds (round chocolate balls are perfect for this). Simply snip a pair of wings from cardboard and stick in place to create the wings.

  • Party favours can be tough, especially if you’re aiming to impress a three-year-old. Soft jelly sweets will always be a hit. Print a little thank-you label and place under the lid.

Thank you gifts

  • No party is complete without a cake and other yummy treats. If you are a creative baker, make your own ladybug and flower biscuits – they shouldn’t be too difficult to make, but the cake could be tricky.
