Try these eye-enhancing tricks when baby’s been keeping you up all night. By Candice Tehini

Being pregnant can put a lot of strain on your body. You may find that your once-beautiful pregnancy glow is now replaced with more of a run-down reflection. The best way to help you look and feel great is to get eight hours of sleep and stay well-hydrated and nourished. But this is not as easy as it sounds – or even possible. So why not try these simple, fuss-free ways to refresh tired eyes.

Dark circles under your eyes, puffy eyelids, dull skin and fine wrinkles around your eyes are most commonly associated with fatigue and stress. It’s most evident around your eye area because the skin here is very thin and fragile, with little supportive tissue. Even though these dark, shadowy hollows are part of the normal ageing process, they’re exaggerated by factors like allergies, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, pregnancy, menstruation, dehydration, poor blood circulation, as well as kidney or liver problems.

Try some of these tips and clever ideas to soothe your tired eyes:

  • Take it easy on heavy eye creams as these could make your eyes look even more puffy.
  • To help reduce puffy eyes, look for an eye cream that contains a diuretic like caffeine. If you want to minimise dark circles and wrinkles, look for a cream that has optical light diffusers.
  • Anything cold will soothe the eye area. So placing chilled cucumber slices on your eyes isn’t just a cliché – it really works. A chilled, wet facecloth will also do the trick.
  • Look out for ingredients like vitamin C and caffeine to help relieve both puffiness and dark circles.
  • Soothe tired eyes with cold Rooibos tea bags. Soak the tea bags in lukewarm water for a few minutes and then place them in the fridge until cooled. Not only will the freshness of the bag decrease puffiness and soothe irritated and red eyes, but the antioxidant in the Rooibos itself will also help fight free radicals for an anti-ageing effect.

Remember that eye cream is not a magical potion. It may take a few weeks for the results to become visible.
