A woman who posted a pic showing her toddler sipping beer from a glass, claiming it “isn’t harmful to the baby”, has been roasted by parents on social media for her action, but she’s defended herself saying “it’s not like she was shooting drugs.”

The post was originally shared on Facebook but was later posted on Reddit, with the mom writing, “She loves having a taste of mummy’s beer #drinkup”.

While it’s not known who the mom is, or how old her toddler is, it’s obvious from the photo that the toddler was way under the legal age for drinking alcohol – and people have hit out at her for allowing this. And understandably so – it’s well known that alcohol consumption below the recommended age is related to a wide range of health and social problems.

Some people warned the woman she’d better delete the pic immediately because she could be reported to social services and have her child taken into care. Others agreed saying her action is “messed up” and harmful to her little one.

According to a report, the mom hit back at the backlash writing that her daughter was “having some mouthfuls of beer” and not “shooting heroin”!

She said: “Clearly you’ve all never experienced being a mum cause if you did u would know that this isn’t harmful to a baby. My mum used to let me drink a little when I was young and would put whisky on my gums when I had sore teeth. I’d never put my baby in danger so all of you go to hell.”

The post is reported to have been deleted from Facebook.

Is it ever okay for toddlers to take sips of wine and beer?

According to Dr Shari Netherson, a US physician at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, and an instructor in Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School, alcohol has very specific effects on the body that can be particularly harmful to kids.

These are some of the dangerous side-effects of alcohol on young kids:

  • It causes their blood sugar to fall to levels that can cause irritability, confusion and even seizures.
  • It could interfere with their brain growth and cause delayed development and lowered intelligence. (This is because most of a child’s brain development occurs in the first few years.)
  • It can result in the child becoming accustomed to and tolerant of alcohol and result in an accidental overdose. (A 2-year-old left alone for even a minute or two, for example, could drink large amounts of alcohol out of someone’s glass, which could be fatal.)
