A woman has given birth to one of the largest babies in Poland earlier this week.

The little girl, named Maja, was born by C-section in a hospital in the town of Piekary Śląskie on 3 August. Doctors at Piekarskie Centrum Medyczne reports that she’s in good health despite her size.

The baby girl weighed a whopping 6,860g (that’s almost 7kg!) and measured 66cm in length.

At a press briefing held by the hospital, Dariusz Piecha, head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department at Piekarskie Centrum Medyczne, said they’d expected the baby to be big, “but not this big”.It’s reported that the doctor said “babies are rarely this size when born, but that she was, according to his knowledge, one of the largest babies to be born in Poland.”

Apparently, the baby is quite demanding and  “is drinking as much as a four-month-old baby.”

The doctor said that despite the size of her newborn, the mom was in good health and just needs to recover from her surgery.

When asked whether the mom suffered from diabetes – a common cause of large babies – medical officials at the hospital said she did not.

The average birth weight for babies is around 3.5kg although a weight between 2.5 kg and 4.5 kg is considered normal. In general, boys are usually a little heavier than girls, and first babies are usually lighter than later siblings.

The heaviest baby ever to be born weighed 9,979kg, according to the Guinness World Records. And wait for it – it was a natural birth to a US woman from Ohio!
