 It’s payday for most South African families today, which means you may want to go out and about this weekend to spend some of your hard-earned cash. Here is a round-up of a few family-friendly outings throughout South Africa this weekend.

Groves & Vineyards

When and where?

27-28 May, Casalinga, Muldersdrift

What’s happening?

Some 25 wine estates will be represented at the Groves & Vineyards festival, giving you the opportunity to taste (and buy) some of the finest wines that our country produces. At the artisanal food market, you’ll find everything you need to take your home-cooked Italian meals to the next level. There will also be an organic produce market, craft beer on tap for those who don’t enjoy wine, and pop-up restaurants for a bite to eat. There’ll be live music and a supervised play area for the kids to make the day extra fun.

How much?

  • Adults: R195
  • Children (aged two to 10): R100

Buy your tickets online, or at the door on the day. Go early to avoid disappointment, as there will only be 1 000 tickets available at the door on both days.

Important information:

Camp chairs, picnic blankets and umbrellas are welcome. No food or drinks will be allowed inside the festival.

Hazel Food Market

When and where?

Every Saturday, Greenlyn Village Centre, Menlo Park, Pretoria

What’s happening?

With more than 70 food stalls, go hungry to this market. Expect to find fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, sweet treats, freshly baked breads, ready-made meals for you to take home, herbs and flowers. There are benches where you can relax with a cappuccino while you watch the kids play on the jungle gym and jumping castle.

The Royal Show

When and where?

26 May – 4 June, Pietermaritzburg Agricultural Showgrounds, Chief Albert Luthuli Street

What’s happening?

Pietermaritzburg’s Royal Show is an annual 10-day event well-known for its agricultural component, including showings of livestock and farming equipment, but also for a wide range of other displays and activities, encompassing lifestyle exhibitions, music concerts and even a funfair for the kids.

How much?

  • Adult (aged 12 and above): R65
  • Junior (aged under 12): R40
  • Pensioner (aged 60 and above with ID): R40
  • Pre-school children (aged under six): Free
  • Wednesday, 31 May: R40 for all persons

Family Fun Day Out

When and where?

28 May, Italian Club, 7 Marais Road, Bedfordview

What’s happening?

Enjoy a relaxing day with your family with delicious food from the food trucks. There’ll also be a beer garden with live entertainment, a market, soft play for the kiddies, a parachute rocket and a shooting tunnel.

World of Adventure at Root44

When and where?

Saturdays and Sundays from 9am – 5pm, World of Adventure at Root 44 Market, between Somerset West and Stellenbosch

What’s happening?

At World of Adventure, there are grassy areas for picnics and food stalls where parents can relax while kids enjoy the various activities available, including mini golf, jungle gyms, sandpit and slides, swings, mini zip-line, mini soccer, cricket and much more.

How much?

  • Children (aged under one): Free
  • Children (aged one to two): R35 (suitable attractions)
  • Children (aged three to 12): R90 (all attractions)
