Milestones: four to six months

Four months:
  • Your baby’s curiosity will begin to kick in. He is now able to recognise familiar places and faces.
  • Your little one will start laughing this month and show that he loves his bottle or your breast – if you are breastfeeding.
  • He also starts to explore objects with his mouth such as toys, his feet or fist.
  • Your baby will be able to sit with some support from you or cushions and he will absolutely love it.
  • This is an important month for your baby as he can now roll over from his stomach to his back. You will notice that he is gaining control over his hands and feet.
  • At this young age your little sprout doesn’t know what shyness is, so he will look and smile at whoever wants to talk to him. He recognises regular visiting family members such as you, your partner, his granny or grandfather.
  • He also responds to bright colours and shades.
  • Your child will cry if he is left alone for too long, as he loves company. He will squeal with delight when he is happy and will say ‘m’, ‘p’ and ‘b’ when he is unhappy. His happy sounds are ‘j’ and ‘k’.
  • Everyone needs entertainment to escape boredom, so your baby will babble on and make several noises to amuse himself!
Five months:
  • Babies love playing games and will learn different skills from these by copying what you do.
  • Your baby will pay a lot of attention to small objects while examining them as his concentration level is expanding.
  • When your baby sees himself in a mirror, he will smile.
  • He will pat his bottle when you feed him and will move his arms or legs when he wants to get your attention.
  • At the end of this month your baby will have mastered full control of his head and will be able to see across a room.
  • He will grasp large toys with both his hands and will use the little finger at the side of his hand to grip things – sometimes he won’t be able to let go though!
  • Your child is starting to develop his own personality, and will start showing signs of self-consciousness. He will be shy around strangers, but will still smile at familiar faces.
  • His speech is improving monthly and he uses facial expressions to communicate. He will try to talk by babbling, blowing, laughing and squealing.
Six months
  • Your baby will start showing preferences for different foods and he will make clear his likes and dislikes.
  • He will be cooperative to some degree during meal times by opening his mouth for the spoon and he will be able to drink from a cup with some help from you.
  • He will express his discomfort and will get excited when he hears someone approaching. He will also make a lot of attention-seeking sounds.
  • Your baby is becoming quite clever and will raise his arms when he wants you to pick him up.
  • He can entertain himself by transferring objects from his one hand to the other and is even able to hold his bottle by himself.
  • Your child’s assertiveness is increasing as he playingly slaps you, pats your cheek or explores your face with his hands.
  • He is getting stronger each month, and can now take the weight of his upper body on his arms and is also able to sit for a few minutes supported by a few cushions. He might understand some of the things you say to him and will start making new two-syllable sounds.
