Sleep problems: Toddler protests
12:59 (GMT+2), Wed, 20 July 2011
Problem:
Your toddler usually goes to bed under protest
12 or 18 months onwards (not useful before this age)
Solution:
Evaluate and try to resolve undue stress in the home.• Stick to your wind-down routine for the day's end. This is not an "I'll show you who's boss" technique, but a secure signal to your child.
Once it is bedtime, put your little one to bed with a hug and a goodnight kiss. Avoid further eye contact and conversation and sit alongside the bed on a chair and read a book or magazine.
If your toddler protests, relax – if you consistently carry out this routine each evening, she'll soon see you are not trying to escape and will settle down to sleep.
