Touch is an amazing experience that has an effect on more than just the tactile sense. It has an uncanny way of integrating the mind, emotions and body, releasing tension and allowing the body's endorphins and serotonin to perform their relaxing, calming and healing functions. Touch is a gift all parents can give their children to ensure health, well-being and optimal development.
Although the value of touch and massage in adults has been known and used for a very long time, it is only since the 1970s that the value of infant massage has been recognised in western society. In India, Asia, Africa and certain parts of Central and South America, however, women have been massaging their babies for centuries.
Nowadays, baby massage is the new buzzword. Parents the world over are taking expensive courses, new books are hitting the shelves and the topic can be found on the covers of almost every baby magazine. The truth is that infant massage is the most natural connection between a mom and her baby. Although it is such a simple and easy thing to do, the effect is powerful. By trusting your instincts and responding to a baby's reaction and body language, any mom can successfully and confidently massage her baby. Even babies who are tactile defensive (don't like to be touched) and who are initially resistant to touch techniques will soon tap into the deep-seated pleasure of being massaged.
