Crying and illness night guide: Croup

Tips for croup

  • Humidify the room if you live in a dry climate, especially when there is cold winter air. If your baby's breathing becomes progressively more laboured or her lips and fingers are blue-tinged, call your doctor immediately.
  • Dab a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the bedding around your baby.
  • Steam the room with a non-automatic kettle if your baby's breathing is very difficult.
  • Give homeopathic croup- or dry cough remedies every half an hour until breathing is easier.
  • Ensure that your baby is warm enough but not overheated.
  • If not allergic, apply vapourising rub to your baby's chest.
  • Position your baby over a bowl of boiling water with a capful of friar's balsam in it, taking care not to burn her.
