Crying and illness night guide: Unhappy, crying tense baby

Tips to calm an unhappy, crying, tense baby:

  • Gently massage your baby's chest between the nipples. If your baby's crying is ceaseless and you are worried about what you might do, ask your partner to take over. Call the medical centre if the crying is accompanied by any symptoms that worry you.
  • Play soft, soothing music.
  • Place a few drops of lavender essence onto the bedding close to your baby.
  • Give your baby and yourself a dose of rescue remedy.
  • Put your baby into bed with you.
  • Make soft clucking sounds close to your baby's ear.
  • Let your baby lie with her head on the left side of your chest to hear your heartbeat.
  • Feed your baby if you suspect she is hungry.
  • Turn your baby onto her tummy and rhythmically pat her back while crooning softly.
  • Check for any restrictive clothing that might be causing discomfort.
  • Check that your baby is not too warm or too cold.
  • Change your baby's position to avoid possible discomfort.
