Serious coughs: Croup

The following serious illnesses associated with coughing require immediate medical treatment.

This serious disease is most common from six months to three years of age. Croup is inflammation of the vocal cords with swelling around the throat and airways, resulting in difficult and rapid breathing, wheezing, hoarse voice and blue tinging of tissue. 
This condition may respond well to self-treatment, but is not to be taken lightly, and a practitioner must preferably be consulted.

Identifying the cough

• Sometimes croup is accompanied by a dry, hacking cough that sounds like a bark, and at others, a loose, mucousy cough.
• Symptoms are usually worse at night and in winter, last for a few hours, and may or may not be accompanied by a fever.
