Fever facts

Sister Lilian offers a guide to the different types of fevers and how to treat them.

  • Fever is the body's way of fighting off inflammation or infection, and isn’t a disease as such. In fact, the immune system is strengthened as a result.
  • Fever must preferably not be allowed to continue uninvestigated for longer than one day, or to suddenly peak too high.
  • A fever of over 38.5°C needs treatment for the cause, or your baby may suffer fever convulsions, although this mostly only happens from 39–39.5°C.
  • A fever may turn out not to be serious, and you may not even be sure why it occurred. Common causes that are mostly not serious include teething and roseola (baby measles).
